If you are reluctant to visit the dentist due to a fear of pain, needles, and drills, take a moment to learn about Waterlase technology. In this video, you can learn how Waterlase works to rid your tooth of cavities and canker sores without the vibration, pressure, and pain potentially caused by a traditional drill.
Waterlase eliminates the heat caused by the friction of traditional drilling. Since this is what is responsible for most of the pain that accompanies minor dental work, patients undergoing Waterlase may not even need anesthetic!

Periodontal disease is a common oral health problem that when left untreated can wreak havoc on your teeth and gums. Prevention and maintenance are key to avoiding gum disease, so read on to learn how you can keep your gums healthy:
- Brush and Floss Daily
Practicing good oral hygiene is one of the most important ways you can keep your gums healthy. Brush at least two times a day with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush. Place the bristles of your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the tooth surface and brush in gentle circles. This will remove plaque and bacteria from along the gum line. Floss once daily (the best time is before going to bed) by sliding the floss between teeth, curving the floss around first one side, and then the other, to remove any plaque and debris that isn’t dislodged by brushing.
- Schedule Regular Dental Check-ups
Visiting a dentist every six months allows you to receive a professional cleaning that will remove any built-up plaque before it causes gingivitis. In addition, your dentist will be able to watch for early signs of gum disease and other oral health issues.
- Make Appropriate Dietary Choices
A healthy diet encourages healthy gums, so reach for whole grains, as they contain vitamin B; fruits and vegetables, which provide vitamin C; low-fat dairy products that offer high levels of calcium and vitamin D; and lean protein containing iron, zinc, and magnesium.
- Avoid Smoking
Smoking reduces your body’s ability to fight off gum infection, causes a multitude of health problems, and can even reduce the effectiveness of some gum disease treatments.
- Manage Stress
Minimizing the stress in your life can improve your overall wellbeing, including your oral health. Stress, anxiety, and depression have all been liked to gum disease.

Parents are responsible for every aspect of their children’s well-being, from infancy to adulthood. Part of that well-being is ensuring good oral hygiene habits. Your children’s dentist is a crucial ally on your journey to instill oral health awareness in your child, but the most important steps you can take to achieve that goal occur right at home. Here are some tips to get you started:
- Start Early. Everyone is a creature of habit, especially children. Good oral hygiene starts in infancy, when parents make it a point to wipe their child’s gums with a damp washcloth on a daily basis. When teeth begin erupting, it is important to start brushing with a soft-bristled brush designed for infants. If oral hygiene is something your child practices from the beginning, it won’t become a major struggle later.
- Educate. Talk to your child about why we brush our teeth and how important it is to prevent cavities. A good time to do this is while your child is brushing, as it helps them to associate meaning with the activity. Always be sure to use language that is appropriate to the age of your child and speak in terms that he or she can understand.
- Encourage. Praise your child for doing a good job with his or her brushing and flossing, and provide positive reinforcement when the job is less than complete. Offer support and encouragement when it comes to visiting the children’s dentist, and reassure your child that it is a normal and necessary part of staying healthy.
- Model. All of the talk in the world will not be enough to counteract different behaviors that you model. Take charge of your own oral hygiene and let your child witness it. Speak positively about your own trips to the family dentist and your child will be more likely to embrace the idea of seeing the children’s dentist.
